Job description
The Smithsonian Institution (SI) is the world's largest museum, education, and research complex, with 21 museums and the National Zoo. This position is located in the Office of Facilities Management (FM). The Office of Facilities Management (FM) is responsible for all Smithsonian facilities, many of which are designated as historic and all of which are visited by millions of people each year.
Duties:
The Supervisory General Engineer is responsible for all aspects of project development, including design, construction, budgeting and evaluation, ensuring projects meet cost, schedule, and quality standards. In this position, you will: · Plan the work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work. Assign work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments, and the capabilities of employees. · Collaborate with senior Smithsonian Institution (SI) stakeholders to identify project needs, define objectives, and develop comprehensive work plans that align with institutional priorities. · Coordinate flow of communications containing technical information to appropriate SI personnel. · Oversee complex engineering and facilities projects from inception through completion, including post-project evaluation and continuous improvement activities.

Education:

How you will be evaluated:
Your resume will be used to evaluate your experience, education, and/or training that address the competencies below: 1. Ability to apply procurement principles, methods, or tools for developing scopes of work, scheduling, coordinating, estimating, and managing maintenance projects or repairs. 2. Skill in apply engineering concepts, principles, and practices on Mechanical, Electrical, or Plumbing systems (MEPs) during renovation or maintenance repair projects. 3. Ability to communicate technical information to diverse audiences. 4. Skill in use of associated tools use with MEP systems devices related to major renovations and maintenance repair projects Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria: Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above. Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above. Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree. This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
